Activity Description

Alcohol and substance abuse pose significant challenges within Native American communities, necessitating culturally sensitive approaches to evaluation and treatment. Alaska Natives and American Indians comprise 2 diverse populations with distinct variations in alcohol and substance abuse rates due to geographic location and tribal affiliation. These populations face unique socioeconomic, historical, and cultural factors that influence patterns of substance use. Effective interventions must integrate traditional healing practices with evidence-based treatments, respecting cultural norms and values to promote holistic wellness. Understanding these complexities is crucial for developing targeted strategies that address the root causes and provide comprehensive support for individuals and communities affected by alcohol and substance abuse.

This activity describes the etiology, epidemiology, specialized evaluation, and treatment approaches for alcohol and substance abuse among Native Americans. Participants gain practical knowledge and skills that enable them to provide more effective care tailored to the unique needs of this vulnerable population. Learners understand that prevention and early identification and treatment of substance use disorders are necessary to lower morbidity and mortality in these patients and communities. This activity also highlights the role of an interprofessional healthcare team in enhancing and applying culturally competent care.

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, dentists, and social workers.

  • Apply culturally competent strategies to engage individuals and communities in prevention and treatment programs for those with alcohol and substance use disorders.

  • Collaborate with an interprofessional team to identify and address barriers to accessing healthcare services and treatment options specific to Alaska Native and American Indian communities.
