Activity Description

Avoidant personality disorder describes a pervasive pattern of social anxiety, extreme sensitivity to rejection, and feelings of inadequacy, but with a strong underlying desire for companionship. This activity reviews the diagnostic evaluation and management of avoidant personality disorder and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in managing patients with this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and social workers.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Differentiate between AVPD and other related mental health conditions, such as Social Anxiety Disorder, to accurately diagnose and develop appropriate treatment plans.

  • Screening individuals for possible AVPD by utilizing validated assessment tools and conducting comprehensive interviews to identify symptoms and patterns of avoidance, social inhibition, and interpersonal difficulties.

  • Assessments to evaluate the severity and impact of AVPD on the individual's functioning and overall well-being, including assessing for co-occurring conditions and identifying any psychosocial stressors that may contribute to the development or maintenance of AVPD symptoms.

  • Coordinate care and advocate for the needs of individuals with AVPD, ensuring continuity of care and facilitating access to appropriate resources and support systems. They should work closely with other healthcare providers and community organizations to create a seamless and integrated treatment experience for the individual.
