Activity Description

As people age, they may experience some decline in their cognitive abilities, which is a normal part of the aging process. However, if this cognitive decline becomes more severe, it can lead to mild cognitive impairment or potentially progress to major neurocognitive disorder or dementia. Cognitive decline is a prevalent issue among individuals older than 60. Dementia encompasses diverse etiologies and types, with Alzheimer dementia being the most prevalent. Alzheimer disease can affect different cognitive functions and significantly diminish an individual's overall well-being. A geriatric assessment can be beneficial in distinguishing between normal aging and more advanced cognitive decline. This activity outlines the evaluation, treatment, and management of cognitive decline, emphasizing the crucial role of an interprofessional team in assessing, treating, and caring for patients with this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and social workers.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Differentiate between normal aging, mild cognitive impairment, and major neurocognitive disorders to accurately diagnose cognitive impairment.

  • Assess the functional and psychosocial needs of older patients with cognitive impairment to develop tailored care plans.

  • Communicate effectively with geriatric patients and their caregivers to educate them about cognitive decline, treatment options, and available support resources.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare professionals to improve cognitive decline management and provide comprehensive care and support for older patients with cognitive impairment.
