Activity Description

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder resulting from damage to the brain's language centers located in the dominant hemisphere (usually the left). Language impairment is characterized by difficulties in verbal or written expression, comprehension, or both. Most aphasia cases involve a combination of these impairments, affecting multiple language functions. Clinically, common types of aphasia include Broca and Wernicke aphasia, conduction aphasia, transcortical motor or sensory aphasia, and alexia with or without agraphia. Although the primary cause of aphasia is stroke, particularly ischemic stroke, it can also result from traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Patients may experience difficulty articulating words, forming sentences, deficits in comprehension, or a combination of these. Symptoms vary from mild word-finding issues to severe language deficits. Evaluation includes neuroimaging and standardized assessments, such as the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination and the Western Aphasia Battery. Treatment addresses the underlying cause and involves a multidisciplinary approach, including speech therapy and support for physical and mental health comorbidities. This activity highlights the evaluation and treatment of aphasia and the essential role of the interprofessional healthcare team in patient care.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the various types of aphasia and their corresponding symptoms to ensure accurate diagnosis.

  • Assess the impact of aphasia on patients' daily functioning and mental health, including the potential for co-occurring depression.

  • Select appropriate referrals to specialists, such as speech-language pathologists and neuropsychologists, and evidence-based treatment strategies to address the multifaceted nature of aphasia.

  • Collaborate with an interprofessional healthcare team to create a comprehensive care plan for aphasia that addresses the physical, emotional, and communicative needs of patients.
