Activity Description

Isolated systolic hypertension is the predominant form of hypertension in the older adult population. Traditionally it has been defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) above 140 mm Hg with diastolic blood pressure of less than 90 mm Hg. It is estimated that 15 percent of people 60 years old and above have isolated systolic hypertension. Per the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Blood Pressure Guidelines, however, an SBP of 130 mm Hg is now considered hypertensive at all ages. The new definition of hypertension will lead to an increased number of elderly being diagnosed with high blood pressure. Isolated systolic hypertension remains an important public health concern as chronically untreated high SBP can carry significant mortality and morbidity. This activity reviews the evaluation and management of isolated systolic hypertension and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in evaluating and improving care for patients with this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Describe the factors that contribute to systolic hypertension.

  • Review the diagnosis of systolic hypertension.

  • Explain management strategies for systolic hypertension.

  • Summarize the importance of collaboration and coordination among the interprofessional team in optimizing the care of patients with systolic hypertension.

MAKE EVERY COURSE AVAILABLE ON DEMAND AFTER COMPLETION OF CME. Thus far, we can review the article and not always the questions and answers once the CME certificates are issued. In some cases, only one or two questions can be viewed once the CME is completed. In 2020, we were able to review MCQs, on this website indefinitely. That is a feature we will like to see again on the website.
