Activity Description

Arachnoid cysts are collections of cerebrospinal fluid arising from the splitting layers of the arachnoid membrane. The etiology of most arachnoid cysts is unclear, but they are likely formed due to abnormal splitting during the embryogenesis of the arachnoid. Most commonly, arachnoid cysts are detected incidentally on cross-sectional neuroimaging of the brain.

This activity for healthcare professionals focuses on enhancing learners' competence in diagnosing and managing arachnoid cysts, providing updated knowledge, skills, and strategies. Participants gain insights into recognizing symptoms, utilizing imaging modalities, and evaluating treatment options. The comprehensive content equips clinicians to intervene effectively, improving care coordination and patient outcomes. The course covers cyst identification, differentiation from other conditions, screening protocols, implementing evidence-based treatments, assessing effectiveness, applying guidelines, selecting interventions, communicating diagnoses, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and coordinating care for optimal patient outcomes. The educational experience ensures proficiency in addressing arachnoid cysts, aligning with the latest advancements in diagnosis and management.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the clinical features of an intracranial arachnoid cyst.

  • Differentiate the imaging findings of arachnoid cysts from other common differential diagnoses.

  • Apply guidelines for managing arachnoid cysts based on their location, size, and associated symptoms.

  • Strategize coordinated care with the interprofessional team, including surgical interventions and postoperative follow-up, for optimal patient outcomes.
