Activity Description

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease,” is a neurodegenerative disease of the motor neurons. This activity reviews the etiology and evaluation of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In addition, it outlines the treatments and interventions available. This activity highlights the role of the interprofessional healthcare team in evaluating and treating patients with this condition.

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Summarize the etiology of ALS.
  • Outline the typical findings on the examination of a patient with ALS.
  • Describe the interventions available for patients with ALS.
  • Review the importance of collaboration and communication among the interprofessional team to enhance the coordination of care for patients affected by ALS.
