Activity Description

Mitral regurgitation is a heart condition characterized by the incomplete closure of the mitral valve, leading to the backflow of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium during systole. This results in a systolic murmur heard at the apex of the heart, often radiating to the left axilla. With a global prevalence of over 2%, mitral regurgitation is a common valvular abnormality with various causes, including congenital conditions, rheumatic fever, and degenerative changes in the valve. This overview aims to cover the essentials of mitral regurgitation, from its pathophysiology and etiology to its evaluation and management, underscoring the importance of early detection and appropriate intervention for optimal patient outcomes.

By participating in this course, learners comprehensively understand mitral regurgitation, including its clinical features, diagnostic modalities, and therapeutic options. Collaborating with an interprofessional team, including cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, nurses, and imaging specialists, enhances patient outcomes by facilitating a multidisciplinary approach to care. Through shared expertise and coordinated efforts, clinicians can accurately diagnose mitral regurgitation, tailor treatment plans to individual patient needs, and optimize post-intervention care for improved long-term outcomes. Interdisciplinary collaboration ensures that patients receive holistic care addressing the valvular abnormality, comorbidities, and psychosocial factors, ultimately promoting a better quality of life and overall cardiac health.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Differentiate between primary and secondary mitral regurgitation etiologies, utilizing diagnostic imaging and echocardiography to distinguish structural abnormalities from functional changes in the mitral valve.

  • Screen patients with signs of heart failure or valvular heart disease for potential mitral regurgitation, incorporating comprehensive history-taking and physical examination techniques to assess risk factors and identify at-risk populations.

  • Implement evidence-based treatment protocols for managing mitral regurgitation, including pharmacological interventions, lifestyle modifications, and surgical or transcatheter interventions, to optimize patient outcomes and prevent disease progression.

  • Collaborate with an interprofessional healthcare team to develop comprehensive care plans tailored to each patient's unique needs, integrating input from specialists and allied health professionals to optimize treatment outcomes and improve patient satisfaction.

  • Outline the pharmacologic therapy as it applies to Mitral Regurgitation
