Activity Description

Hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola is an uncommon but benign skin disorder characterized by warty thickening and pigmentation of the nipple, the areola, or both. The condition does not resolve spontaneously and can persist without intervention. Medical treatments, including keratolytic topicals like salicylic acid or lactic acid, are typically first-line therapies but are rarely sufficient. Physical treatments such as cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen or carbon dioxide laser tend to provide more satisfactory outcomes, although they are associated with risks like keloid formation and scarring. Due to the cosmetic concerns that often accompany this condition, patients frequently seek treatment despite the benign nature of the disorder.

Participants in the course gain a thorough understanding of hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola, including its pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and treatment options. They learn about the limitations of medical treatments and the importance of mechanical interventions such as cryotherapy and laser therapy. The course also emphasizes the significance of an interprofessional approach to patient care, where collaboration among dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and nursing staff enhances diagnostic accuracy, optimizes treatment strategies, and minimizes complications, leading to improved patient outcomes.
