Activity Description

Cyanide toxicity is a rare but often fatal poisoning that occurs through ingestion, inhalation, dermal absorption, or injection. Historically, cyanide toxicity has been used in mass suicides, individual murders, and chemical warfare. Ingestion and inhalation of toxic salts and gases are the most common sources of toxicity, respectively, though ingestion of plants, medications, and cyanogenic chemicals are alternative routes of exposure. Symptoms vary across organ systems, affecting the neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal systems.

Cyanide toxicity often goes unrecognized in the acute setting, and antidotes are subsequently underutilized. This course explores the challenges surrounding this condition, including the clinical diagnosis and treatment strategies. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in identifying cyanide toxicity, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the clinical features associated with cyanide toxicity.

  • Determine patients at risk for cyanide exposure.

  • Implement management of cyanide toxicity.

  • Apply interprofessional team strategies to improve care coordination and outcomes in patients with cyanide toxicity.

  • Outline the pharmacologic therapy as it applies to Cyanide Toxicity
