Activity Description

Colloid brain cysts are benign, slow-growing lesions typically found in the brain's third ventricle, particularly near Monro's foramen. These cysts contain a gelatinous material composed of mucin, old blood, cholesterol, and ions—and often present diagnostic and management challenges. Symptoms may vary widely, including headaches, memory issues, vertigo, and diplopia. Although rare, untreated colloid cysts can lead to acute hydrocephalus and sudden death. Their diagnosis and treatment require a careful balance between invasive and minimally invasive approaches, with craniotomy offering better access but higher initial risks and minimally invasive methods posing higher recurrence rates.

Participants in this activity learn to identify clinical presentations of colloid cysts, evaluate diagnostic imaging findings, and assess treatment options. The course emphasizes the importance of interprofessional collaboration in developing patient-specific management plans. Through this approach, healthcare teams can improve patient outcomes by carefully weighing risks and benefits, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, and reducing recurrence and morbidity associated with treatment choices.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  •

Differentiate colloid cysts from other intracranial lesions using advanced imaging techniques like magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography.

  • Screen at-risk patients for potential complications of colloid cysts, including hydrocephalus or sudden neurological deterioration.

  • Implement evidence-based diagnostic protocols to confirm the presence of colloid cysts accurately.

  • Describe interprofessional team strategies for improving care coordination and communication to advance the diagnosis and management of colloid cysts.
