Activity Description

Palatal and gingival cysts of the newborn are common, benign oral inclusion cysts that usually resolve spontaneously within the first few months of life. These lesions are classified as Epstein pearls, Bohn nodules, and dental lamina cysts. They share similar clinical and histological features but differ in embryologic origin and anatomical location. These small lesions are often mistaken for pathological abnormalities, which can raise concern among parents and even some clinicians. Accurate recognition and differentiation from more serious oral conditions are essential for dental and medical professionals involved in neonatal care, as misdiagnosis may lead to unnecessary interventions and heightened parental anxiety.

This activity reviews the classification and developmental basis, clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, and key differentiators of this condition from more serious conditions, such as congenital epulis and natal or neonatal teeth. This activity also provides a comprehensive, evidence-based overview of palatal and gingival cysts of the newborn, emphasizing their developmental origins, clinical presentation, and natural resolution. Additionally, this activity utilizes illustrated clinical cases and practical guidance to help participants distinguish between benign neonatal cysts and less common, yet clinically significant, oral pathologies. In addition, this activity emphasizes the importance of effective communication and interprofessional collaboration among allied healthcare professionals in supporting early recognition and management, as well as providing appropriate parental counseling and ensuring informed, accurate, and compassionate care.
