Activity Description

Esophageal cancer is classified into 2 main types based on histologic features: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. In recent decades, the incidence of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma has decreased. In contrast, esophageal adenocarcinoma has risen significantly in the United States, particularly in the distal esophagus and gastroesophageal junction, mainly due to the prevalence of Barrett's esophagus.

Esophageal cancer ranks as the fourth most common gastrointestinal cancer, with the third highest mortality rate in the United States, following colorectal, pancreatic, and hepatobiliary cancers. Risk factors for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma include smoking, alcohol consumption, and a diet low in fruits and vegetables. In contrast, esophageal adenocarcinoma high-risk factors include Barrett esophagus, smoking, high body mass index, and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Diagnostic confirmation of esophageal cancer is obtained by biopsy. Imaging studies are primarily utilized to stage the disease. Treatment approaches vary based on the stage and type of esophageal cancer, mainly comprising resection, radiation therapy, and systemic treatments. Advances in diagnostic techniques and treatment modalities have contributed to better management and outcomes, though the prognosis remains challenging, especially in advanced stages. This activity for healthcare professionals enhances the learner's competence in recognizing esophageal cancer, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional management approach to improve patient outcomes.
