Activity Description

Traumatic Brain Injury is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, with an annual occurrence of more than 1.5 million. Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injury, and motor vehicle-related incidents are the second leading cause. Blunt head trauma is classified as mild, moderate, or severe traumatic brain injury. This activity describes the etiology, classification, pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of blunt head trauma and highlights the role of interprofessional teams in improving outcomes for such patients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Describe the etiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, and classification of patients with blunt head trauma.
  • Outline the evaluation and resuscitation of patients with blunt head trauma.
  • Review the conservative and surgical treatment options available for patients with blunt head trauma.
  • Explain interprofessional team strategies for enhancing care coordination to facilitate rapid diagnosis and targeted management of patients with blunt head trauma.
