Activity Description

Chronic pain is a leading chief complaint in an adult ambulatory care setting. Unfortunately, chronic non-cancer pain is often poorly understood by practioners as it does not respond to pharmacological monotherapy. This activity reviews the evaluation, management, and treatment of chronic non-cancer pain with highlighting the role of the interprofessional team in the care of patients with chronic non-cancer pain.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Describe the pathophysiology of chronic pain
  • Recognize the key components in the history and physical exam in the evaluation of a patient with chronic non-cancer pain
  • Summarize the treatment options for chronic non-cancer pain
  • Outline the importance of an interprofessional team approach in treating patients with chronic non-cancer pain
