Activity Description

Chemotherapy in cancer has merged the disease course from a terminal and catastrophic result in merely all cases to a treatable and sometimes curable illness through the right approach. This activity's goal is to teach the reader about the basics of various chemotherapy drugs available; it also highlights the role of the interprofessional team in the use of these agents.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Describe the history of chemotherapeutic agents currently on the market.
  • Review the mechanism of action of common chemotherapeutic classes and agents.
  • Outline the most frequent adverse effects of the basic drug types, as well as some specific drug side effects.
  • Identify interprofessional team strategies for improving care coordination and communication to advance cancer chemotherapy and improve outcomes.

Reviews

The assessment questions were not entirely focused on the material in the activity. Many were simply extensions of the material, which I liked because it made me look at what I know and dig deeper. However, several questions extended beyond what someone should be expected to have learned in the activity. The word "fertility" appears once in the entire activity in a list of common side effects. And yet, the assessment had questions about patient counseling on fertility when starting (or finishing) chemo. A few questions were about patient assessment at follow-up, including one that dealt with which labs to obtain -- this activity does not address hepatotoxicity with methotrexate. There is a question about a specific genetic translocation, and another addressing a genetic mutation. I felt many questions don't belong here in this assessment, for an activity that goes over the history and basics on chemotherapy.
