Activity Description

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare entity, but one which has very high mortality and morbidity rates. This article will explain the clinical presentation of AFE, including a detailed description of the pathophysiology, and the very complicated evaluation and treatment modalities. This activity reviews the evaluation and management of AFE and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in evaluating and improving care for patients with this condition.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the underlying risk factors for amniotic fluid embolism.
  • Describe the triggering pulmonary pathology that initiates the syndrome of amniotic fluid embolism.
  • Outline correct methods of analyzing coagulation parameters and how to treat them once they are determined.
  • Explain the importance of improving care coordination among the interprofessional team to enhance the delivery of care for a woman who has sustained amniotic fluid embolism.
