Activity Description

Traumatic aortic injuries encompass a spectrum of potentially life-threatening conditions resulting from blunt or penetrating trauma to the aorta. Prompt recognition and management of these vascular injuries are essential to prevent catastrophic complications such as hemorrhage, aortic rupture, organ ischemia, or death. Treatment strategies are dictated by the severity of the aortic injury and the hemodynamic stability of the patient; strategies include open surgical repair, endovascular stent graft placement, or conservative management. However, traumatic aortic injuries continue to have high morbidity and mortality rates.

The activity for healthcare professionals reviews the etiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, evaluation, grading system, management strategies, and complications of blunt and penetrating traumatic aortic injuries. The activity also highlights the critical role of the interprofessional team in improving short- and long-term outcomes for patients with these potentially devastating vascular injuries.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify clinical signs and symptoms suggestive of traumatic aortic injuries in patients presenting with blunt or penetrating thoracoabdominal trauma.

  • Select the appropriate diagnostic imaging modality for a patient with a suspected traumatic aortic injury.

  • Apply evidence-based principles when selecting a therapeutic intervention for a patient with a traumatic aortic injury.

  • Develop and implement effective interprofessional team strategies to improve outcomes for patients with traumatic aortic injuries.

Respectfully, you might consider making sure that the patient's actualy injury is defined in the history. we have to assume without real evidence in a few of the vignettes.
