Activity Description

Physicians and medical researchers have a moral and legal obligation to obtain informed consent. Informed consent must include the patient being competent and understanding the options, risks, and benefits. For pediatric patients, parental consent, or consent from a surrogate, must be obtained for medical procedures, treatment, or research. When reasonable, pediatric assent is also a vital part of a positive physician-patient relationship that engages the child in their care. To avoid legal and ethical issues, this activity highlights the role of the interprofessional team in obtaining informed consent from parents.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Assess the reasons parental consent should be obtained.

  • Identify the historical basis of obtaining informed consent.

  • Determine the common challenging reasons informed parental consent is obtained.

  • Communicate how the healthcare team can work together to obtain parental consent and achieve better outcomes.

Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUSOM) requires instructors, planners, managers, and other individuals who are in a position to control the content of this activity to disclose any real or apparent conflict of interest they or their immediate family may have as related to the content of this activity. CUSOM will identify, review, and resolve all conflicts of interest that faculty, authors, activity directors, planners, managers, peer reviewers, or relevant staff disclose prior to an educational activity being delivered to learners. Disclosure of a relationship is not intended to suggest or condone bias in any presentation but is made to provide participants with information that might be of potential importance to their evaluation of a presentation.
