Activity Description

An anembryonic pregnancy, also known as a blighted ovum, is a unique and relatively common pregnancy complication that carries profound implications for both expectant parents and healthcare providers. In this medical condition, a fertilized egg implants in the uterus and forms a gestational sac, but an embryo fails to develop within it. Although the term "blighted ovum" has been historically used, the medical community increasingly prefers the more precise designation of "anembryonic pregnancy" to describe this phenomenon. Anembryonic pregnancies represent a significant component of early pregnancy losses, impacting patients physically and emotionally. These losses represent a challenging aspect of reproductive health. Understanding the intricacies of anembryonic pregnancies is crucial, necessitating both medical expertise and compassionate care to support those facing this challenging diagnosis. This activity reviews the various aspects of anembryonic pregnancies, from their clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria to management options, and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in educating and supporting patients with this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Screen pregnant patients effectively to identify those at risk for anembryonic pregnancy, considering risk factors such as maternal age and medical history.

  • Select appropriate diagnostic tools and imaging modalities to accurately confirm the diagnosis of anembryonic pregnancy.

  • Implement evidence-based protocols for managing anembryonic pregnancy, including appropriate treatment options such as expectant management, medication administration, or surgical intervention.

  • Collaborate with interprofessional healthcare team members to provide comprehensive care to patients with anembryonic pregnancy.
