Activity Description

Patient-controlled analgesia is used to treat acute, chronic, postoperative, and labor pain. A variety of medications can be used for patient-controlled analgesia and are administered intravenously (IV), through an epidural or peripheral nerve catheter, and transdermally. This activity outlines and reviews the role of the interprofessional team in managing patients who undergo patient-controlled analgesia.

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the anatomical structures, indications, and contraindications of patient-controlled analgesia.

  • Describe the equipment, personnel, preparation, and technique in regards to patient controlled analgesia.

  • Review the potential complications and clinical significance of patient-controlled analgesia.

  • Outline interprofessional team strategies for improving care coordination and communication to advance and improve outcomes.
