Activity Description

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a rare yet serious pulmonary condition marked by pulmonary edema, hypoxia, and hypotension. HPS is caused by viruses of the Orthohantavirus genus and the Hantaviridae family. HPS presents with fevers, myalgia, and severe respiratory compromise, with up to 40% mortality. The most common etiology of HPS is the Sin Nombre virus in North America and the Andes virus in South America. Respiratory failure can be avoided through judicious fluid and volume management. The need for mechanical ventilation is common shortly upon disease onset. Care is primarily supportive, and prevention is key to disease reduction. Public health measures can best approach human-rodent contact reduction.

Within the activity, learners receive a comprehensive overview of HPS, including its epidemiology, etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and management strategies. The course explores the latest research findings, providing insights into the pathophysiology of HPS and the mechanisms underlying its severe respiratory compromise. Additionally, learners explore the differences between HPS and hemorrhagic fever renal syndrome, ensuring a thorough understanding of both conditions. Practical guidance on preventive measures and public health interventions to reduce human-rodent contact are covered. Effective communication among team members is emphasized throughout the course, enabling seamless care coordination and implementing evidence-based practices. Collaboration among diverse healthcare professionals ensures comprehensive patient care and effective preventive measures against this potentially fatal syndrome.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Differentiate between Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and other respiratory illnesses, particularly distinguishing this condition from similar febrile syndromes.

  • Implement appropriate supportive care measures promptly upon suspicion or confirmation of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, focusing on fluid and volume management to prevent respiratory failure.

  • Select and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests for Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome confirmation, considering serological and molecular methods.

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary care involving infectious disease specialists, respiratory therapists, and critical care teams to optimize outcomes for patients with Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.
