Activity Description

Globe rupture is a vision-threatening emergency. This activity delineates the diverse spectrum of ocular trauma, encompassing globe rupture, laceration, perforation, and open globe injuries, necessitating rapid diagnosis and intervention. It highlights the healthcare team's pivotal role in promptly evaluating and treating patients presenting with this condition, emphasizing the importance of a high index of suspicion when managing ocular trauma. Reviewing the mechanisms underlying globe rupture, the activity elucidates the distinctions between penetrating injuries, perforation, and blunt force-induced ruptures, providing insights into diagnostic approaches and urgent interventions necessary for preserving vision.

Learners will delve into the diagnostic intricacies of globe rupture, exploring clinical examination techniques utilizing slit lamp evaluations and fundoscopic assessments to confirm suspected cases. Emphasizing the criticality of immediate ophthalmologic consultation when suspecting globe rupture, this activity underscores the limited reliability of imaging modalities for definitive diagnosis while acknowledging their supplementary role in the diagnostic workup. By elucidating the nuances of identifying and managing this ocular emergency, this activity is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge required for rapid and accurate evaluation, thereby ensuring timely intervention and optimizing outcomes for patients presenting with globe rupture.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the incidence and prevalence rates of globe rupture, recognizing its occurrence as a relatively rare but vision-threatening ocular emergency.

  • Identify key physical exam findings indicative of globe rupture, including ocular pain, decreased visual acuity, hyphema (blood in the anterior chamber), irregularly shaped pupils, relative afferent pupillary defect, and subconjunctival hemorrhage.

  • Differentiate between various management options available for globe rupture based on the severity and extent of injury, distinguishing conservative measures, surgical interventions, and adjunctive therapies tailored to individual cases.

  • Implement interprofessional team strategies for improving care coordination and communication to advance the management of patients with globe rupture and improve outcomes.
