Activity Description

Cryosurgery was first described in the 1800s and has since evolved into a mainstay of therapy within dermatology. Cryosurgery is an effective alternative to more invasive techniques and can be delivered quickly and cost-effectively in an outpatient setting. Because this is a non-invasive technique, cryosurgery can produce excellent cosmetic outcomes. This activity highlights the indications, contraindications and complications of cryotherapy.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Describe the indications for cryotherapy.

  • Summarize the complications of cryotherapy.

  • Review the mode of action of cryotherapy.

  • Summarize the importance of improving care coordination among interprofessional team members to improve outcomes for patients undergoing cryotherapy.

One of the questions has an incorrect answer choice coded as the correct one. The cone/device in the vignette gets stuck to the skin, and the question is how best to remove the device without causing damage. I put to use warm water, which is the correct answer, but the choice coded as correct is "Rotating the probe clockwise and then pulling until separated" -- which is clearly wrong. Please correct this.
