Activity Description

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in the United States affecting about one-third of the general population. According to the third edition of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD-3), insomnia is characterized by difficulty in either initiating sleep, maintaining sleep continuity, or poor sleep quality. These symptoms occur despite the presence of adequate opportunity and circumstance for sleep and result in daytime dysfunction. Chronic insomnia can adversely affect the health, quality of life, academic performance, increase the risk of motor vehicle accidents, decrease the productivity at work, irritability and increase daytime sleepiness.This activity reviews the cause, pathophysiology and presentation of insomnia and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in its management.

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Review some of the various etiologies of chronic insomnia.
  • Describe the pathophysiology and evaluation methods for chronic insomnia.
  • Summarize the treatment and management options for chronic insomnia, both pharmaceutical and otherwise.
  • Explain interprofessional team strategies for improving care coordination and collaboration in order to employ better identification, screening, and treatment of chromic insomnia and improve patient outcomes.
