Activity Description

Cancer screening is pivotal in reducing the mortality and morbidity from cancer. Some of the screening methods, like a pap smear, has been successful in decreasing the mortality from cervical cancer. In order to maximize the net benefit of screening, it is key to identify the person with an average risk of cancer and subject to screening. This activity reviews the screening guidelines of some of the common cancers and their use by the interprofessional team.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Review the burden of the leading cancers in the United States for which screening has been effective.

  • Explain the goals of cancer screening in the United States.

  • Outline the various methods of cancer screening, benefits, and risks.
