Activity Description

Brainstem stroke is the most lethal form of all strokes. Both hemorrhagic and ischemic brainstem strokes account for a significant cause of morbidity and mortality on the global front. The brainstem accounts for approximately 10% to 15% of all strokes. An ischemic form has a higher incidence compared to its hemorrhagic brainstem counterpart. The brainstem is composed of the midbrain, the pons, and the medulla oblongata, situated in the posterior part of the brain. The pons is the most commonly involved area of a brainstem stroke. The presentation of brainstem stroke can vary depending on the brainstem area affected. Evaluation of brainstem stroke consists of clinical assessment, laboratory studies, and imaging studies to exclude differential diagnoses, identify the type of insult, and characterize the stroke.

Knowledge of brainstem stroke syndromes is critical for early diagnosis and timely management to ensure better clinical outcomes. An adequate understanding of anatomy, physical exams, imaging, and pathophysiology is pivotal during the evaluation and management of the disease. This activity reviews the evaluation and treatment of brainstem infarction and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in assessing and treating patients with this condition.
