Activity Description

Anal cancer is a rare tumor comprising only 2.5% of all digestive system malignancies in the United States. The pathophysiology of the development of anal cancer is believed to be directly linked to a complex inflammatory process secondary to infections such as Human Papillomavirus types 16 and 18. This activity explains the pathophysiology, classification, evaluation, and management of patients with anal cancer. It highlights the role of the interprofessional team in treating and decreasing long-term morbidity in patients with anal cancer.

  • Outline the evaluation of a patient with anal cancer.

  • Explain the management strategies in a patient with anal cancer.

  • Explain the importance of a cohesive, interprofessional team approach to caring for patients with anal cancer to improve treatment and outcomes.
