Activity Description

Alosetron is a medication used to manage and treat severe diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). It is in the class of 5-HT receptor antagonist medications. This activity outlines the indications, action, and contraindications for alosetron as a valuable agent in IBS-D management. This activity will highlight the mechanism of action, adverse event profile, and other key factors (e.g., off-label uses, dosing, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, monitoring, relevant interactions) pertinent for members of the interprofessional team in the management of patients with IBS-D.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the mechanism of action of alosetron.
  • Describe the adverse effects of alosetron.
  • Review the appropriate monitoring when treating patients with alosetron.
  • Outline interprofessional team strategies for improving care coordination and communication to advance and improve outcomes for patients affected by IBS-D.
