Activity Description

This activity delves into the significance of airway monitoring in evaluating a patient's ventilatory function and gas exchange. Various methods employed for airway monitoring and the constraints associated with each are reviewed. The emphasis lies in conducting a comprehensive physical examination, which involves evaluating airway anatomy and utilizing the LEMON mnemonic to identify a challenging airway. Furthermore, the activity addresses the importance of employing objective monitoring tools, such as waveform capnography and pulse oximetry, to verify the appropriate positioning of an endotracheal tube and to assess ventilation and oxygenation. Lastly, the activity highlights the crucial role of an interprofessional healthcare team in monitoring and treating patients with airway compromise.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify potential airway obstructions and complications.
  • Implement proper use of airway devices and procedures.
  • Select appropriate airway equipment based on patient needs.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional team to optimize airway management strategies and provide appropriate surveillance of patients undergoing airway monitoring.
