Activity Description

An air leak is the leakage of air from an air-containing cavity into spaces that, under normal circumstances, do not contain air. The term air leak syndrome is used to describe symptoms of respiratory distress occurring in conjunction with an air leak. This activity reviews the evaluation and management of air leaks and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in the care of patients with this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Outline the causes of air leaks.
  • Review how to recognize an air leak.
  • Summarize how to manage an air leak.
  • Explain why careful planning and discussion amongst interprofessional team members involved in the management of patients with air leaks will improve outcomes.
