Activity Description

Human immunodeficiency virus infection is a significant health problem worldwide. Advances in treatment have made this disease not only manageable but have also dramatically decreased the incidence of opportunistic infections and decreased progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Practitioners should utilize current guidelines for treatment. This activity describes these guidelines and highlights the role of interprofessional teams in treating this complex disorder.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Describe how a patient with acute HIV infection might present, and the initial screening test that should be done.
  • Identify when antiretroviral therapy should be initiated in patients with human immunodeficiency virus.
  • Outline some common antiretroviral therapy regimens.
  • Summarize collaboration with interprofessional team members to ensure that high risk patients are being educated about and offered pre-exposure HIV prophylaxis.

Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUSOM) requires instructors, planners, managers, and other individuals who are in a position to control the content of this activity to disclose any real or apparent conflict of interest they or their immediate family may have as related to the content of this activity. Disclosure of a relationship is not intended to suggest or condone bias in any presentation but is made to provide participants with information that might be of potential importance to their evaluation of a presentation.
