Activity Description

Arterial line or catheterization is a routine procedure in diverse clinical settings, including the intensive care unit, emergency room, and operating room. This involves inserting a catheter into a peripheral artery, enabling hemodynamic monitoring and arterial blood sampling. Various anatomical sites can be used for arterial catheterization, each with specific risks and benefits. Practitioners must discern procedural indications and contraindications, ensuring proper equipment preparation, personnel readiness, and adept insertion skills. Given the inherent risks, a comprehensive understanding of anatomy, indications, contraindications, complications, and insertion techniques is essential. As with all invasive procedures, those involved in arterial catheter placement must be prepared to intervene promptly in case of a complication. This activity reviews the pertinent anatomy, indications, contraindications, complications, and techniques for arterial catheterization and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in ensuring safe access to improve patient outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify appropriate indications and contraindications for arterial catheterization, recognizing the clinical scenarios where the procedure is necessary or inappropriate.

  • Differentiate among anatomical sites for arterial catheter insertion, understanding each location's unique risks and benefits.

  • Implement standardized processes and best practices for arterial catheterization, including meticulous distal pulse assessment before cannula insertion and adherence to aseptic techniques.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with interprofessional teams, conveying pertinent information about arterial catheterization indications, procedures, and patient status.
