Activity Description

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a condition resulting from the herniation of abdominal contents into the thoracic cavity resulting in lung hypoplasia and altered pulmonary vascular development. This activity reviews the pathogenesis, evaluation, and management of congenital diaphragmatic hernia. It highlights the role of an interprofessional team in the short term and long term management of survivors with this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Describe the pathophysiology of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
  • Review the various methods to assess the fetal lung volume and severity of diaphragmatic hernia in the antenatal period.
  • Outline the management of infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
  • Describe the importance of having an interprofessional approach to improve the short term and long term outcomes of survivors with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
