Activity Description

The mean corpuscular volume (MCV) is a crucial measurement to determine the underlying cause of anemia. MCV is considered a critical step in the diagnostic process for anemia, providing valuable information about the average size and volume of red blood cells. Descriptively, MCV can be viewed as a "footprint" of the anemia, indicating its characteristics. MCV, in conjunction with other parameters such as hemoglobin and hematocrit, helps classify anemia into 3 main categories—microcytic, normocytic, and macrocytic. Microcytic, normocytic, and macrocytic anemia are defined by MCV levels below, within, and above the normal range, respectively.

MCV is crucial in the comprehensive definition of anemia, complementing other diagnostic elements such as pathophysiology, histopathology, treatment, and epidemiology specific to each category of anemia determined by MCV values. Understanding MCV values is vital for the comprehensive evaluation and management of anemia, particularly as the underlying pathology worsens. An evidence-based, interprofessional approach significantly improves patient outcomes, especially for older patients with MCV changes, as clinicians use MCV as a diagnostic parameter. This activity emphasizes the significance of MCV values in diagnosing and treating various types of anemia, guiding further management strategies, including supplementation, monitoring, and long-term follow-up, resulting in improved patient outcomes. This activity also highlights the critical role of an interprofessional healthcare team in assessing and categorizing anemia based on MCV values by fostering collaboration and ensuring comprehensive and effective patient treatment plans for optimal patient care outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the importance of mean corpuscular volume in diagnosing and evaluating various hematological conditions, including anemia and related disorders.

  • Implement appropriate interventions based on mean corpuscular volume levels to manage different anemia types effectively.

  • Assess mean corpuscular volume values in conjunction with other hematological parameters for a comprehensive anemia diagnosis.

  • Collaborate effectively with an interprofessional healthcare team to assess patients with abnormal mean corpuscular volumes, optimize treatment strategies, and ensure well-coordinated patient care.
