Activity Description

"Central pain syndrome" (CPS) refers to chronic pain resulting from injury or malfunction within the central nervous system. The risk factors for developing CPS include genetic predisposition and environmental exposures such as trauma, stroke, or neuroinflammatory disease. The underlying mechanism involves central sensitization, in which the central nervous system amplifies pain signals despite minimal or absent peripheral input. Individuals with CPS may report burning, tingling, stabbing pain, or heightened responses to nonpainful stimuli (allodynia) and painful stimuli (hyperalgesia).

The diagnosis of CPS is clinical but often requires the exclusion of peripheral or structural causes of pain. Management typically involves a multimodal approach, including pharmacologic agents (eg, antidepressants, anticonvulsants), physical therapy, and psychological support. The prognosis varies, with some individuals experiencing chronic, debilitating pain that markedly impairs quality of life.

This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners' proficiency in evaluating and managing CPS. Learners will deepen their understanding of the relevant anatomy and the condition's risk factors, etiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation. Current diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations will also be presented. Improved skills will equip clinicians to collaborate successfully within an interprofessional team caring for individuals with CPS, improving outcomes.
