Activity Description

Lipoprotein X (Lp-X)-induced hyperlipidemia is a rare condition primarily seen in liver dysfunction, notably in cholestasis-related conditions. This abnormal lipoprotein, Lp-X, lacks apolipoprotein B100 and contributes to severe elevations in cholesterol levels. While atherosclerosis is uncommon, Lp-X accumulation leads to skin xanthomas, thrombotic events, and hyperviscosity syndrome, potentially fatal complications. Diagnosis involves challenging laboratory interpretations due to interference with LDL calculations and apolipoprotein analyses. Management revolves around addressing the underlying liver dysfunction, considering therapies like ursodeoxycholic acid, obeticholic acid (for primary biliary cholangitis), and fibrate therapy in select cases. Plasmapheresis might be used for severe complications, but liver transplantation remains the definitive treatment for primary liver disease.

This activity discusses the intricacies of hyperlipidemia associated with Lp-X accumulation, offering a comprehensive exploration of its unique etiology, clinical presentation, and management. While hyperlipidemia is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular disease, LpX-induced hyperlipidemia presents a distinct clinical picture with no associated increase in cardiovascular risk. Instead, it is closely linked to cholestatic liver disorders, making its prognosis and management markedly different from conventional hyperlipidemia. Through course participation, participants will be equipped with the specialized knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of LpX-induced hyperlipidemia confidently. An interprofessional team approach ensures a holistic and well-informed approach to managing LpX-induced hyperlipidemia This collaborative effort not only enhances the competence of each team member but also optimizes patient care, leading to improved clinical outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the common causes of lipoprotein X-induced hyperlipidemia.

  • Assess the clinical features and distinctive lipid profile patterns associated with Lipoprotein X-induced hyperlipidemia to facilitate accurate and early diagnosis.

  • Implement the typical management and treatment considerations for patients with lipoprotein X-induced hyperlipidemia.

  • Explain the role of an interprofessional team in managing patients with lipoprotein X-induced hyperlipidemia to help improve clinical outcomes for these patients.

  • Outline the pharmacologic therapy as it applies to Lipoprotein X-Induced Hyperlipidemia
