Activity Description

Blistering distal dactylitis (BDD) predominantly affects children and is characterized by the emergence of multiple fluid-filled lesions that specifically target the volar fat pad of the distal phalanx of the digits. BDD has also been reported in immunocompromised individuals. The pathogenesis of the disease remains unclear. A wound biopsy often demonstrates a superficial split with neutrophils and spongiosis. Systemic antibiotics are commonly recommended to avert the development of new lesions and the spread of infection to other sites. This activity reviews the comprehensive assessment and effective management strategies pertinent to BDD, underscoring the pivotal role of an interprofessional team in enhancing patient care. An emphasis is placed on the prevalent culture findings, predominantly detecting group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus in the bacterial cultures derived from these fluid-filled lesions, aiding in diagnostic confirmation and tailored treatment plans for affected patients. The course discussion aims to equip healthcare professionals with the latest advancements and evidence-based practices to optimize patient outcomes.
