Activity Description

Penile cancer is an uncommon malignancy, but when diagnosed, it is psychologically devastating to the patient and can pose a challenge to the treating physicians. Patients with this condition tend to delay seeking medical attention as the lesion is usually painless, resulting in self-medication attempts before diagnosis. This delay is also associated with embarrassment, guilt, fear, and denial by the patient and can significantly affect survival rates, morbidity, and postsurgical outcomes. The overall risk in the US is 1 in 100,000 or less. Risk factors include phimosis, uncircumcised state, poor genital hygiene, HPV infection, and smoking. Initial treatment of early-stage disease is surgical and has a good prognosis. When more advanced, inguinal lymph node dissections may be needed, which have considerable morbidity.

This activity explores the spectrum of penile cancer, primarily focusing on squamous cell carcinoma, the most prevalent penile malignancy. Additionally, it covers the etiology, epidemiology, histopathology, diagnosis, and staging of penile cancer, as well as the role of lymph node metastases in the disease's prognosis and treatment planning. Special attention is given to the challenges of delayed diagnosis and the necessity for prompt, accurate evaluation to optimize patient outcomes. The session addresses various treatment modalities, emphasizing the importance of an interprofessional approach to managing this condition effectively. Treatment options, follow-up protocols, and considerations for retaining functional outcomes postsurgery are also highlighted.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively within the interprofessional team to ensure a shared understanding of patient needs and treatment plans to improve outcomes for patients affected by penile cancer.
