Activity Description

Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is a spectrum of clinical manifestations seen in neonates due to withdrawal secondary to intrauterine drug exposure. It is most commonly associated with maternal opioid use and can be complicated by intrauterine exposure to benzodiazepines, alcohol, and various other drugs. The incidence of NAS has continued to rise in recent years, highlighting the need for providers to be able to recognize and appropriately manage the complications. There is significant long-term neurodevelopmental morbidity and mortality among NAS babies. This activity reviews the evaluation and management of NAS and highlights the interprofessional healthcare team's role in improving care for patients with this complex condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

  • Identify the importance of improving care coordination amongst interprofessional team members to improve outcomes for patients and families affected by neonatal abstinence syndrome.
