Activity Description

Hemorrhagic fever renal syndrome (HFRS) is an acute zoonotic disease transmitted through aerosolized excrement of rodents (mice, rats, shrews, and voles) and is the most common zoonosis in Asia. The infection is caused by various species of viruses under the hantavirus genera, which use rodents as hosts. The outcome of the disease is usually self-limited, and the severity of the disease depends on the viral strain. However, some patients develop HFRS, which is characterized by renal dysfunction, thrombocytopenia, and multi-organ failure. Severe disease classically presents in a 5-stage progression, which can result in death. Much of this presentation can be attributed to the immune response to the virus rather than cytotoxic virus effects. This activity reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, outcome, and treatment of HFRS. In addition, it highlights the role of the healthcare team in evaluating, preventing, and managing the disease.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the key clinical features and epidemiological factors associated with hemorrhagic fever renal syndrome.

  • Differentiate between the various Hantavirus strains responsible and their respective clinical manifestations.

  • Assess the severity and progression of HFRS using established clinical criteria and laboratory findings.

  • Collaborate with infectious disease specialists, nephrologists, epidemiologists, and public health authorities to manage and control HFRS outbreaks. Outline the interprofessional team strategies to manage patients with hemorrhagic fever renal syndrome to achieve the best patient outcomes.

  • Outline the pharmacologic therapy as it applies to Hemorrhagic Fever Renal Syndrome
