Activity Description

Otalgia is ear pain and breaks down into two categories of primary otalgia and secondary otalgia. Primary otalgia is pain coming directly from the ear where secondary otalgia is referred pain from somewhere outside the ear. This activity reviews the broad differential diagnosis and workup for both types of otalgia and highlights the role of the interprofessional workforce in treating otalgia.

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of individuals in nursing.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Review the broad differential diagnosis of primary and secondary otalgia.
  • Outline the appropriate history, physical, and evaluation of otalgia based on presenting clinical signs and symptoms.
  • Identify the treatment and management options appropriate for primary and secondary otalgia.
  • Explain the importance of collaboration and communication amongst the interprofessional team to ensure proper treatment in primary and secondary otalgia.
