Activity Description

Opioids are medications used to manage and treat pain, cough, or diarrhea. This activity outlines the indications, actions, and contraindications for opioids. This activity will also highlight the mechanism of action, adverse event profile, and other key factors pertinent to the interprofessional healthcare team members in managing patients using an opioid and in light of the opioid crisis.

This course meets the new DEA requirement for the Mainstreaming Addiction Treatment (MAT) Act.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

Identify the mechanism of action of opioid drugs.
Describe the adverse effects of opioids.
Outline and explain the appropriate monitoring necessary when using opioid therapy.
Summarize interprofessional team strategies for improving care coordination and communication to regulate opioid use and improve outcomes.

I found this activity lacked practical application to every day practice and was very basic. Additionally the assessment questions included information that was not included in the CME activity which was frustrating.
