Activity Description

Atrioventricular (AV) conduction is evaluated by assessing the relationship between the P waves and QRS complexes. Normally, a P wave precedes each QRS complex, with a fixed PR interval of 120 to 200 milliseconds. Atrioventricular block represents a delay or disturbance in the transmission of an impulse from the atria to the ventricles. This can be due to an anatomical or functional impairment in the heart’s conduction system. This activity describes the causes and pathophysiology of AV block, discusses the evaluation of patients with atrioventricular block, and highlights the interprofessional team's role in managing these patients.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the signs and symptoms associated with atrioventricular block to facilitate early recognition and diagnosis.

  • Differentiate between different degrees of atrioventricular block (first, second, and third degree) based on ECG findings and clinical presentation.

  • Apply evidence-based treatment strategies for atrioventricular block, including medication management, temporary or permanent pacemaker implantation, and other interventional procedures when indicated.

  • Collaborate with cardiology specialists and other healthcare professionals to develop a comprehensive care plan for patients with atrioventricular block, considering their unique clinical circumstances and comorbidities.
