Activity Description

Substance use disorders (SUDs) can have a devastating impact on individuals, families, and communities. SUDs occur when recurrent alcohol or illicit drug use causes clinically significant impairment, such as health problems, disability, and/or failure to meet primary responsibilities at work, school, or home. Women are at the highest risk for SUDs during their reproductive years, which is why substance use during pregnancy is common. SUD in pregnancy is associated with multiple obstetric and neonatal adverse outcomes, which highlights the need for universal screening and treatment of SUD in pregnant women. Even women who achieve and maintain abstinence while pregnant remain at high risk for relapse into SUDs in the postpartum period. This activity reviews the clinical evaluation and management of SUD during pregnancy and highlights the role of an interprofessional team in the treatment of these patients to optimize maternal and fetal clinical outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of social workers.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Review the definition of substance use disorder and the most commonly used substances during pregnancy.
  • Outline the strengths and weaknesses of commonly used screening tools for the detection of substance use in pregnancy.
  • Summarize the recommended management of substance use disorder during pregnancy.
  • Identify the role of an interprofessional team in caring for patients with substance use disorder during pregnancy.
